Third Grade Banner

Welcome to Barton Hills Third Grade!

Third grade is the grade where young minds begin to transition from primary to intermediate grades. Students grow from learning to read to reading to learn. We are so excited to guide your child on this wonderful journey.

Some of what happens in third grade:

  • Students begin to read from chapter books and work in book clubs to talk and discuss what they read.
  • Students become fluent in their multiplication and division facts.
  • Students will write a full 5 to 6 paragraph research paper.
  • Students learn about our local community and even some history of Austin.
  • Science is full of hands-on activities and experiments in all the areas of science: physical science, earth science, and life science.
  • Third grade is also the first-year students take the STAAR test. Teachers will work and guide students to help them be prepared for these tests that are administered at the end of the year.

Mrs. Tso has been at Barton Hills for 23 of her 28 years teaching.  She is a native Austinite and attended BHE. She spends a lot of time in the neighborhood between work and visiting her parents who still live in her childhood home. Mrs. Tso graduated from Austin High and Southwest Texas State University (now called Texas State). She has two children that are also Barton Hills alumni. Her son, Benton, is 18 and plays football and throws shot put at Bowie High School. Her daughter, Reagan, 16 writes for the newspaper at Bowie High School and plays guitar in a local band. In her spare time, she loves to bake and look for new recipes to try. On beautiful days you will find her walking around her neighborhood enjoying the sun!  Fun fact:  one of the t-shirts hanging in the front office was Mrs. Tso's when she was a student at BHE in 1984.
