Barton Hills administrators are highly dedicated to ensuring our elementary school runs efficiently and effectively. They work hard to foster a positive, productive learning environment that promotes social and academic growth. Our administrators are actively involved in all aspects of the school's operations, from classroom to the lunchroom and arrival/dismissal - we interact with our student body on a daily basis.
Our administrators strive to build a school culture based on respect, trust, and collaboration and they work closely with parents and guardians to ensure that our students are making the most of their education.
Mrs. Achtermann and Mr. Atkinson are always accessible and eager to make sure that our school community is thriving.

Kati Achtermann has over 30 years in education. She is a graduate (twice) of the University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor of Science in Education and a Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction. She has also completed 60 hours of training in the Science of Reading and has her English as a Second Language certification.
Mrs. Achtermann began her career in the Austin Independent School District, teaching First through Third grades at Winn Elementary. She has served as an administrative intern in the Central Administration offices and had the honor of helping to open Bertha Casey Elementary as the Assistant Principal.
Mrs. Achtermann has been the Principal at Barton Hills Elementary since July 2000 and takes pride in continuing the 50+ year traditions of strong parent and community involvement, student-centered education, and teacher leadership. She loves school “Spirit Days” and breaking into her supply of wigs and costumes to dress up on a theme day.
Mrs. Achtermann lives in Austin with her husband, Jeff, and two children (both BHE alumni). Emily is currently a student at UT in the McCombs School of Business, and Will, is currently in high school. They share their house with Lily the cat and Leia their Great Pyrenees dog. Mrs. Achtermann enjoys binging Netflix series, reading and baking.

Jeremy Atkinson is entering his 16th year in education. Mr. Atkinson graduated from Texas State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication. He earned his Teacher Certification and then graduated from Lamar University earning his Master of Education in Administration. His past roles in Austin ISD include being an elementary general education and special education teacher. Before Barton Hills Elementary, Mr. Atkinson was the Administrator for the district’s Elementary Discipline Alternative Education Program.
Mr. Atkinson provides leadership experience and academic expertise that focuses on collaboration, critical thinking, and high standards. He has worked with several of the elementary campuses in AISD, as a member of the Alternative Education Department. His philosophy in education encompasses the whole child and focuses on positive behavior management and building relationships with students and campus stakeholders daily.
Mr. Atkinson’s focus for students is to ensure that they are responsible and productive members at school, at home, and in the community as they continue their educational careers and beyond. He is excited to be a part of the Barton Hills community and to serve the students and families of Barton Hills Elementary. In his free time, Mr. Atkinson enjoys getting outdoors with his family to enjoy hiking and camping.
