Fifth Grade Banner

Fifth graders at Barton Hills become part of a community that values real life experiences. Our program is not just about classroom learning, but also getting out and exploring the world around us. Our students will go on numerous field trips, including the stunning Westcave Preserve and the Outdoor School at Camp Champions, as well as the Barton Creek Greenbelt where they can experience hands-on learning in a natural setting.

We believe in the importance of critical writing and thinking skills, and our program is designed to foster these abilities in all of our students. By setting goals and tracking their own progress, students take ownership of their learning and develop important self-motivation skills. Our program also incorporates project-based learning and choice menus, allowing students to explore their interests and learn in ways that work best for them. With this approach, students get what they need and become active participants in their own education.

Our 5th-grade program is led by a team of experienced and passionate teachers, with decades of expertise with young learners. Ms. Geltemeyer teaches American History and Science to the classroom, inspiring students to explore the world around them and understand the historical events that have shaped our society. With engaging lesson plans and hands-on activities, Ms. Geltemeyer encourages critical thinking and curiosity in her students. In ELA, Ms. Price fosters a love of reading and writing in her students, helping them to develop strong communication skills that will serve them well throughout their academic and personal lives. Students build a reading life with her extensive library. Mathematics comes to life in the classroom of Ms. Thomas, who develops budding mathematicians with her engaging and challenging lessons. Ms. Thomas helps her students build a strong foundation in math that will serve them well in middle school and beyond. Together, these three teachers create a dynamic and engaging environment where students can grow and evolve to take ownership of their education.
