First grade is a time of so much growth, change and FUN! It is a year full of hard work as the students really set off on their journey of learning. We see their reading levels move up throughout the year as they also become stronger in math, writing, spelling, handwriting and social skills. It is the year where we really get to see so much growth and it is a joy to watch. This year we will be working on:
- Learning all of the letter sounds, hunks and chunks and how to spell and sound out words using phonemes.
- Working on reading skills such as fluency, comprehension and decoding.
- Engaging our math skills such as adding, subtracting, number sense, place value, time, measurement, problem solving and more.
- Studying science. ( i.e. the world around us, the scientific method, earth science and physical science.)
- Studying the world around us and how it works.
- Social skills to help all of us as we grow and work together.
